An eight-hour training course is conducted with each employee in the organization (hourly, salary, associates) to explain to them the Value Safety 365 process. During this interactive and fun session, employees are encouraged to provide feedback on the current status of the organization’s safety efforts and the desired future state of the safety process in their workplace. First-line supervisors also attend this session, so they can have an increased understanding of the personal needs (and current frustrations) of employees.
Safety Training Program
The training program focuses on personal employee accountability in safety and the need to take full responsibility for one’s own actions. To begin the day an engaging and informative video, “The Charlie Morecraft Story”, is used which tells the story about a refinery worker who was seriously injured as a result of his own actions. This is followed by a discussion of the elements of personal accountability and seeks to answer the question of why some employees are more responsible than others. Improved personal interaction skills are also developed to assist employees in helping others they work with become more responsible for safety.
Value Based Safety Approach
The Value Safety 365 principles are then reviewed with employees. These principles focus on positive reinforcement and employee behaviors and a discussion of what motivates people. The behavioral process is discussed and an emphasis is placed on making proper choices based upon consequences. In this session, the class participates in a consequence analysis exercise. Employees learn the importance of using good feedback skills and positive reinforcement skills to help motivate others. This includes role-playing to demonstrate the effective use of the skills learned.
At the end of the session, a process for conducting positive observations is discussed and ideas are shared with the group on how to live the Value Safety 365 process. A review of the key points is conducted for employees to reinforce the learned skills and its application in a new safety process at work and at home.
